CONSTIPATION


Difficulty in passing or passing too infrequently (once in 2 or 3 days) of stools, which may be hard or even soft is called constipation.
Sometimes there is a lack of urge, an ineffectual urge, or a
sensation of incomplete stools. Broadly all these can also be
termed as constipation.

CAUSES:


Modern lifestyle (commonest cause nowadays) of not eating enough and drinking less water. Not getting enough exercise. Emotional and psychological problems and eating too much meat or dairy products.
Chronic abuse of laxatives.
Bottle-fed babies.
Pregnancy.
Certain drugs like antacids, iron, calcium, blood pressure medications.
Certain digestive tract diseases.
Certain school-going children because they are shy to tell the
teacher, which later develops into a habit of ignoring the urge
 

SYMPTOMS:


Stools (every 2 or 3 days).
Difficulty in expelling feces from the rectum.
Painful evacuation of feces.
Hard stools.
Blood in stools-suggest fissure, fistula, piles.

DO'S AND DON'TS:


A high fiber diet or raw food diet is recommended.
Chew food well and never be in a hurry while eating. Get plenty of fiber from-peas, beans, potatoes, raw vegetables, dried fruits, and fresh fruits.
Drink plenty of water.
Take regular exercise to condition your stomach and back muscles. This will help with bowel movement. Bran is good for proper motions however do not rely on bran as a long term cure.
Do not suppress the urge to pass stools. Make passing stool a regular habit. Sit in the toilet every day at the same time for about 10 minutes, even if you don't have an urge to move your bowels. This will take time but it will surely work. Do this preferably after a meal.
Avoid regular laxatives.
Regular yoga helps bowel movements.
 

CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR:


You have fever and abdomen pain with constipation.
Blood in stools.
If constipation starts after taking a new treatment.
